NASA scientists have produced the most compelling evidence yet that bacterial life exists on Mars.

It showed that microscopic worm-like structures found in a Martian meteorite that hit the Earth 13,000 years ago are almost certainly fossilised bacteria. The so-called bio-morphs are embedded beneath the surface layers of the rock, suggesting that they were already present when the meteorite arrived, rather than being the result of subsequent contamination by Earthly bacteria.

"This is very strong evidence of life on Mars," said David Mackay, a senior scientist at the Nasa Johnson Space Centre, who was part of the team of scientists that originally investigated the meteorite when it was discovered in 1984.

In a 1996 study of the sample, Dr Mackay and others argued that the microfossils were evidence of life, but sceptics dismissed the claims, saying that similar-shaped structures might not be biological. The new analyses, the product of high resolution electron microscopy, make a strong case for the Allan Hills 84001 Meteorite having carried Martian life to Earth. The microscopes were focused on tiny magnetite crystals present in the surface layers of the meteorite, which have the form of simple bacteria. Some argued that these could be the result of a carbonate breaking down in the heat of the impact.

The new analyses show that this is very unlikely to have resulted in the kinds of structures seen in the rock. Close examination suggested that about 25 per cent of the crystal structures were chemically consistent with being formed from bacteria.

"We feel vindicated. We've shown the alternate explanation is absolutely incorrect, leading us back to our original position that these structures are formed by bacteria on Mars," Dr Mackay said.

Dennis Bazylinski, an astrobiologist from the University of Nevada who peer-reviewed the findings, said: "Until now I was on the fence but this paper has really thrown out the non-biological explanation." However, he added that the study was not a "smoking gun" for life on Mars. "One meteorite is never going to answer such a complex question," he said.

According to scientists, the meteorite was broken off the surface of Mars by the impact of an asteroid, and reached Earth after floating through space for about 16 million years. It landed in Allan Hills in Antarctica. Scientists were able to trace the meteorite back to Mars, as its chemical composition matched the relative proportions of various gases measured in observations of the atmosphere of Mars made by the Viking spacecraft in the 1970s.

The meteorite also preserves evidence of liquid water on Mars, suggesting that the planet may have had more suitable conditions for life to develop in the past. The investigation was published in the November issue of Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, the journal of the Geochemical and Meteoritic Society. Nasa is expected to announce the findings formally on Monday.

The team has also been studying two other Martian meteorites - Nakhla, which landed in Egypt in 1911, and Yamato 593, which was found by a Japanese expedition to Antarctica. In research due to be published shortly, the scientists claim that both of these fossils also show evidence of microbial life.

Ufo Files I Have Loved And Lost

The media feeding frenzy that greeted the release of the final tranche of BRITISH UFO FILES was a fitting end to my involvement in one of the most successful FREEDOM OF INFORMATION projects in recent years.

#UFOfiles began trending on Twitter early on Friday 21 June as blanket coverage of the files release was rolled out first in UK media including "BBC News, ITV, Channel Four, Five News, Sky News, Al-Jazeera" and later in the USA (with stories featured on "NBC News" and in the "Washington Post, New York Times" and "Huffington Post").

I described why the five year disclosure programme was so important in my National Archives blog that was republished by "The Guardian's" Comment is Free and the "Daily Telegraph" as follows:

"...whatever you believe about UFOs and alien life, you can now see for yourself what constitutes the 'evidence' and make up your own mind. This is freedom of information working to inform and educate the public."In total the Ministry of Defence have now released 209 files and approximately 52,000 pages of information on UFOs and related mysteries. This sobering fact leaves those still calling on governments to make full disclosure about their knowledge of the alien presence on Earth looking increasingly sidelined.

Of course, conspiracy theorists will continue to dismiss the real 'disclosure' as a whitewash because its contents do not support their preconceived beliefs. And their suspicions will be encouraged by those who make a living from UFOs such as NICK POPE and Tim Good, the latter interviewed by "Sky News" here, because it is in their interest to keep the mystery alive and kicking.

Pope is on record as saying there should be "full disclosure" of all information on UFO matters held by governments across the world. Yet he has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that MoD papers relating to him remain permanently hidden from the public on the grounds of "privacy". A judgement published by the Information Commissioner in 2010 revealed that Pope had written to MoD asking them to with-hold these papers permanently.

How ironic that after 52,000 documents have been disclosed the only files now being permanently with-held are those written by his superiors at the Ministry of Defence. The reason these papers are being with-held is because they contain information about Nick Pope's "conversion" to UFO believer that followed his alien abduction experience in Florida in 1991. This happened shortly before he joined the 'UFO desk' when he claims he had little or no interest in the subject.

More recently, Bob Sheaffer's Bad UFOs blog reveals how Nick Pope has been paid by computer games companies to promote stories about secret government plans to thwart alien invasions. Despite this conflict of interest he shamelessly continues to make spurious claims about aliens posing a threat to earth's defences and hints darkly that" '...much of the best material has not been released' " by his former employers.

Unable to debate rationally and facing the loss of both status and credibility, he has decided the best tactic is to portray me as a "useful idiot" who is parroting the MoD line on UFOs as having no defence significance. He fails to appreciate the delicious irony that this is the very same line that "he himself articulated" whilst employed by the MoD. Is he a 'useful idiot' too, or just an idiot?

Anyone who has followed my Freedom of Information Campaign to persuade the British government to release their entire archive of UFO material will know how far from the truth this caricature actually is.

In reality, from 2000 onwards my FOI campaign made me a thorn in the side of the MoD to the extent that after seven years of constant pressure they relented and decided to transfer all surviving UFO papers to The National Archives.

But instead of hailing the disclosure as a breakthrough, conspiracy nuts have portrayed it as a cover-up because the documents do not provide any support for their beliefs.

As my sociologist friend Ben Radford notes in his article 'What Keeps Conspiracy Theories Alive?':

"'Conspiracy theories, by their nature, cannot be conclusively disproven since any evidence contradicting them can be dismissed or ignored as part of the conspiracy itself. Because it's never "case closed" the door for further discussion and inquiry is always left open.'"'The truth' sought by those who believe in flying saucers is hidden in plain sight in the testimony and beliefs embedded within the files themselves. Interviewed by journalists from around the world during the past seven days, it became obvious to me that the arguments I have been making about UFOs as a modern myth - a social and cultural phenomenon - were slowly being taken on board, as if something had clicked into place.

Both "The Times" and "The New York Times," for instance, led their coverage on the fact that MoD could no longer justify spending public money on its UFO unit after 60 years of finding no evidence 'to suggest an extra-terrestrial presence or military threat.'

Jasper Copping, writing in the "Daily Telegraph," wryly noted that, 'in the end it was not the aliens that overwhelmed the "UFO desk" but a rather more mundane tormenter - Chinese lanterns.'.

And the fact that public awareness of UFOs - and 'encounters' with them - waxes and wanes in response to the popularity of films and TV shows like "Close Encounters," was picked up by the "Daily Mail" and by Richard Norton-Taylor in "The Guardian," who quoted me as saying:

"There is evidence that some people were encouraged to report their observations to the MoD and to the press, which could be a direct result of increased public awareness during the period that the first UFO files were being released by The National Archives. I believe this demonstrates that UFOs are very much a social phenomenon."The idea of UFOs as signifying more about our our beliefs and anxieties as human beings rather than providing hard 'evidence' of extra-terrestrials also became the subject of questions put to me by Justin Webb on BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

And the link between UFOs and religion came up yet again when I appeared on the BBC's Politics show with Andrew Neil and former LibDem MP Lembit Opik, who who has now come out as a 'believer' in aliens.

But my favourite quote of the whole two day media event came from "The New York Times" as follows:

"DR CLARKE, WHO HAS APPROACHED THE UFO PHENOMENON FROM A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, NOTED THAT MANY UFO SIGHTINGS CAME FROM THE SCOTTISH CITY OF GLASGOW BETWEEN 10 PM AND MIDNIGHT - AROUND THE TIME THE PUBS ARE CLOSING."ADDENDUM

In no way am I either a friend or mouthpiece for the MoD. I am an academic journalist with an interest in breaking stories from archive sources. The reason I was invited by TNA to act as an unpaid consultant for this project was because I had spent ten years working in the archives at Kew on the surviving UFO files and had run a successful campaign to persuade MoD to release those files that continued to be with-held under the 30 year rule. These facts are all in the public domain for anyone who makes the effort to look for them.

The National Archives is a UK government department dedicated to preserving and conserving historical documents from Britains long history. I believe the MoD UFO archive is a national treasure and should be preserved for access by future generations. All my efforts over the past 15 years have been directed towards the preservation of the surviving files and making them accessible to the public.

As a result of my research - funded entirely from my own pocket and my employer, Sheffield Hallam University - I wrote the first comprehensive survey of the contents of the entire UFO archive at Kew (The UFO Files, published by Bloomsbury and now in second edition). Along the way I interviewed most of the surviving MoD UFO desk officers and a number of intelligence officers who worked on this subject at MoD.I do not and never have worked for MoD, neither would I agree to do so as this would undermine my principles as a journalist. I have absolutely no security clearance as it was not required and even if offered would have been turned down as it would have undermined my objectivity as a independent researcher.

The views and opinions I express about UFOs and related subjects in my book and statements are entirely my own and are the product of three decades of research into primary documents and field investigations.

VETERAN BRITISH UFOLOGIST JENNY RANDLES ADDS:

To support Dave here. Whatever the critics say of him, he has done a great service to the UFO community by pressurising the MoD into releasing these files and then ably coaxing this important disclosure into the public domain. Those files are out there for anyone to read and to study for themselves because of these actions and anyone perceiving that act as a cover up is living in cuckoo land in my opinion.

I have been involved in collating UFO investigations for 40 years, both regionally in north west England and, for 13 years, as director of investigations with the British UFO Research Association. The cases we studied closely mirror those in the MoD files - though we had the time, remit and inclination to follow the more interesting ones through when the MoD (perfectly reasonably) did not. What we found, and have stated over the decades that we have found, matches what the MoD report.

There ARE some UFOs (around 5% of reported cases) - in the sense that they are not readily resolved by investigation. But there is no substantive or well documented hard evidence that these unsolved cases reflect either a threat to our defence or alien craft. They do, in my view, offer evidence of several intriguing things on the fringes of scientific knowledge in fields such as atmospheric physics and the nature of consciousness. They are, unarguably, worthy of study and NOT a simple consequence of drunken percipients on route from the pub. But equally the MoD was never - and is not now - the correct body to collate such data and spend precious resources on a subject that really needs to be demystified and placed into the realms of scientific study. We will learn things from UFOs that way. We may even do useful things with these findings, such as harness better power sources and energy resources. We could save lives, as some of these UFOs (or UAP as we should correctly be calling them) appear to be a potential threat to our ever increasing air traffic.

Such progress will be made more likely by the releasing of this data for further study and by us seizing back the initiative for UFO investigation from the hands of those who were never willing volunteers nor suitable participants. UFOs have always been wrongly presumed to be synonymous with alien spaceships. Waking up to the realisation that they are no such thing and are, instead, something possibly less profound but certainly no less fascinating, is great news if you really want to search for the truth.

As for Dave being some kind of pawn used by a conspiracy to hide the truth, I have known him since he was a young, enthusiastic student of this field. His interest is real and he has done the hard miles in the field, developed his ideas appropriately through many investigations. He means what he says and says what he means. Both very good things here. I may not agree with everything that he says on the subject - but I do with much of it and respect all of his views about the remainder. I certainly know that he is nobodys puppet. And I, for one, say thank you for his efforts.

We find that in Ufology there is a fundamental binary of antonyms that are both contradictory and complementary: UFO, Unidentified Flying Object, and IFO, Identified Flying Object. As we know, the opposed elements are only understood if we compare them, as happens with classical dualisms like day/night, light/darkness, man/woman and good/evil. Back to the UFO idea, private research organizations like M.U.F.O.N, coincide with the authorities in the fact that approximately 95% of the UFO sightings and detections become identified as natural elements or man-made artifacts. So, 95 % of UFOs become IFOs. However, the privileged component of the duality is the UFO conception, even if only 5 % of the UFOs remain unidentified. Some researchers and fantasists try to make us believe that IFOs don't exist.But we must recognize not only that UFOs are the absolute minority, but also accept the possibility that some of those few UFOs become IFOs after some more research, so the definition of Unidentified Flying Objects is not necessary permanent but transitory and conditional.If this is the case, the UFO conception is unreliable. Every UFO includes the possibility of becoming an IFO, but, on the contrary once the flying objects are identified as balloons, airplanes, Venus, Jupiter, drones, hoaxes or space junk, the IFO condition becomes permanent and recognized.
