Indiana Monster Snakes
GHOUL SNAKE INHABITS CEMETERY
The most horrible snake story of the season comes from Benton county, and is told by the Lafayette Courier as follows: "There is a larger snake, measuring fifteen feet in length, as large in circumference as a good-sized stovepipe, with eyes of fire, adorned with horns underneath fully ten inches long, in the cemetery west of Oxford Benton county, Ind. It has been seen by at least a dozen people, and the supposition is that it subsists by feasting upon the dead bodies interred therein. Rumors of such a reptile inhabiting the city of the dead have been afloat for two years but until recently they have not been believed.
A gentleman of Oxford, whose word was never known to be doubted saw the snake the other day, and although he found and picked up a club, he became frightened at its mammoth size, and instead of entering into a battle with it he took to his heels and without looking back to see if it was after him, ran breathless to his home. At first he gave some excuse for this hurried and excited arrival but at last related his experience. There is a certain amount of distress among the citizens of Oxford, who have relatives buried in the cemetery, over the general belief that the reptile is living upon the dead bodies. The gentleman who informed the Courier reporter this morning of the matter says that on investigation there have been found large holes leading down into the graves. It is with a feeling of horror, accompanied with a shudder, that the people of Oxford have learned of this unnatural being. Those who have seen it, describe it as being of frightening appearance with its fiery eyes, horns and mammoth size. None have seen it but that at the first glimpse their hair seemed to raise on their very heads, and their hearts to almost stop beating at the sight of the terrible creature. - "Logansport Journal, Logansport, Indiana - 3 September 1889"
MONSTER SERPENT DITCHES VEHICLES ALONG ROAD
By International News Service.
GREENSBURG, Indiana, October 8. - Prominent citizens in the southern part of Decatur County declare that stories regarding the depradations by a monster snake are not fables. They declare the reptile, reported to be from twenty-five to thirty-five feet long and proportionately large as to girth, has been seen several times in the community during the last few days.
Work has been virtually abandoned in some sections and men, armed with guns, are searching for the monster. A calf belonging to Robert Bishop is said to have been devoured by the snake and the entire community professes intense alarm.
Some residents advance the theory that the reptile escaped from some passing show. Others point to stories, emanating from Sullivan and Green counties, many miles distant, of a serpent of similar proportions which is declared to have ditched "flivvers" [Ford Model T automobiles] in encounters on the highways. The Sullivan-Green county reptile was described at widely separated points within a space of a few hours and it received much publicity - some of it more than half serious - in the newspapers.
Now the Decaturites are wondering if this monster donned figurative seven league boots and emigrated to this country. - "Brownwood Bulletin - Brownwood, Texas - October 8, 1920"
BIG JIM
The Woods and Streams north of Jasper found a dubious honor in the natural history of Indiana a few weeks ago when two men who were canoeing a flooded stream spotted a large snake swimming uncomfortably close to them.
After whacking it into oblivion with a paddle they took it to a conservation officer who identified the 42-inch-long serpent as a western cottonmouth, so-called because of its white mouth. Indiana suddenly became identified as the home of a fourth species of poisonous snake.
The western cottonmouth joins the timber rattlesnake and copperhead of southern and central Indiana and the massasauga, found in northern Indiana swamps.
The western cottonmouth, or water moccasin, has long been suspected to inhabit southern Indiana. One was reported in Gibson County in 1887, but its existence wasn't confirmed. Persons who want to look for cottonmouths might note its dark brown coloring under black markings, a triangular head and a heavy body. One way of telling it from the non-poisonous copperbelly is to look it in the eye. If the pupil is round the snake is safe. If it is slit-shaped like a cat's, it is venomous.
Experts say that of the four poisonous Indiana snakes, only the rattlesnake's bite is usually fatal. There is only one sure test of this rule of thumb.
Fortunately, or unfortunately--depending on your interest in snakes--residents of most of the Wabash Valley will have to go a ways to find one of the poisonous species. A recent issue of Outdoor Indiana reported that poisonous vipers seem to give Sullivan, Daviess, Knox, Pike and most of Gibson counties a wide birth.
A visitor to Vincennes in 1816 attributed the lack of snakes to the Indian custom of burning off the tall grass of the prairie each Fall to make spotting game easier. Also, the flat, rolling plain of Knox County is not the sort of topography rattlers prefer. They like hilly timbered land.
Then maybe the poisonous snakes have heard of the inglorious end of Big Jim.
A century ago stories of a giant rattlesnake were striking fear in the hearts of the area. Big Jim was reported as the terror of the Wabash, a monster rattler 10 feet long (or longer in some estimates). He made his home at Rattlesnake Bluff on the Little Wabash, 12 miles north of Carmi, Ill., although he reportedly ranged up and down the Wabash Valley.
The snake was first noticed in the spring of 1881 when loggers went to log the Skillet Fork bottoms.
According to the story of this confrontation, told with grand detail in 1908 by the Vincennes Commercial, the loggers were driven to shelter in rain to the bluff overhanging the river. A black man in the crew was sent for firewood, but he came back, terrified and empty-handed. The logger, who was named Big Jim, reported seeing a great demon prowling the bluff. Capt. Ed Ballard, in charge of the crew, angrily ordered the man back to his task.
Minutes later a scream was heard from the top of the bluff and Jim hurtled down the bluff and into the flooded river. He was never seen again, though an extensive search was made of the river the next day. More men ascended the bluff but heard what they said sounded like a thousand rattles. Rain or not, the survivors boated to the Illinois bank of the Wabash in record time.
The Commercial, looking back, said the logging business in the area was set back by stories of the giant snake. Also, other excursions of this of this monster rattler, now called Big Jim in honor of his victim, were reported in succeeding years. Near the bluff one farmer looked into his chicken yard and saw his best Plymouth Rock rooster staring eyeball to eyeball with a giant snake. He emptied a shotgun at the snake, and it disappeared. He said his rooster was never the same again.
Cattle and hogs were reported bitten in the area.
Then a group of turkey and squirrel hunters, including Knox County Sheriff Lee Staley, saw what they said was Big Jim on a log sunning himself. They blasted away at him, interrupting his nap but apparently not hurting him.
A country school four miles from Rattlesnake Bluff was the next site of a report. Big Jim was spotted nearby, and the frightened teacher gathered the students inside the school, shut the blinds and hid out until evening when parents came to see what the problem was. School was dismissed for the rest of the year.
One are farmer reported the snake's love for his blackberry patch. The farmer, William Ude, said his bull tried to horn the critter and came out the loser to the snake's fangs.
A large cage put over the hole to what was supposedly Big Jim's lair was found bent and twisted. A price was put on the snake's head, and fearful farmers began wearing high boots to ward off attacking snakes. A snake, Big Jim, of course, frightened a team of stagecoach horses near Centerville, Ill., sending one frightened traveler up a tree.
Dynamiters blew holes over Rattlesnake Bluff, maybe sending thousands of snakes to their deaths, but reportedly not Big Jim. In 1908, after more than a quarter of a century there still was a rattlesnake mania north of Carmi, and all reports of snakes were attributed to the legendary serpent.
Big Jim finally was put to rest, shortly after the latest account of his history had been told in the Commercial.
On the W.H. Thompson farm in southwestern Sullivan County, farm hand John Bascomb heard a commotion in the pigpen. A boar had a giant rattlesnake in his jaws, close enough to the head that the snake couldn't get in a knock-out punch. By the time he had returned with a rifle the other hogs in the pen were in the fray, stomping and biting at the writhing snake. Bascomb finally got a clear shot, and the snake was finished.
Bascomb mounted the skin, which measured 12 feet five inches and had 29 rattles. Whether Big Jim or just a big rattler, the legend of the terror of the Wabash died in a Sullivan County pigpen. - "The Valley Advance, Vincennes, Ind., May 31, 1983"
BIZARRE 'FIERY' SNAKE
Mark Weston, a farmer living near the town of Alexander, Ind., relates a most wonderful phenomenon which occurred at his place. He says:
"Just after dark night before last I had occasion to go out to the barn to look after the horses. A public highway passes within yards of my house, and the barn is built about 20 rods from the house due south and somewhat nearer the road. I started from the house in the direction of the barn and bad gone perhaps half the distance when I noticed something playing along the ground that looked like a tremendous fiery snake.
The object crossed my path, and as it did so I felt the air grow much colder and a peculiar, moaning sound arose, like the sighing of the wind through the trees, only it was loud enough to drown a man^aEURTMs voice when he would shout. Then I felt something come over me like electricity, and I became motionless as though I had grown fast to the ground.
I was terribly scared, but I never lost the use of my hands or legs through fear, though there was something peculiar in the air that simply paralyzed me. When the thing had got perhaps 50 feet from me going west, it turned and came back, and as it did so the moaning sound changed to a shrill whistle, something like a locomotive would make, and when it got just in front of me it took a course directly away from me and toward the barn.
It traveled very rapidly and looked like a large ragged streak of fire, perhaps 30 feet long and 18 inches in diameter. The thing reached the barn and in almost an instant ran directly up in front of the building and onto the roof. I expected every moment to see the barn burst into flames, but it did not. The great fiery snake ran with great rapidity all over the building, in almost every direction, up and down, crosswise and every way. I suppose, a thousand times. It then came to the front of the building and elevated itself, and it stood straight on its tail fully 30 feet in the air.
I was perfectly conscious all the time, but try as I would I could not move from the spot. After the thing had remained in an upright position for, I presume, three or four minutes there was a sudden explosion like the discharge of a cannon, and the thing disappeared entirely. With the disappearance of the strange phenomenon I felt a shock like the first one I had felt, and at the same time I gained control of my limbs. I hastened to the house, told my wife what I had seen, and she thought I was crazy, but upon my insisting she consented to accompany me to investigate the matter.
You can imagine our surprise upon reaching the barn to find it covered with a remarkable network resembling large ropes of ice. They appeared to pass around the building in exactly the way the fiery monster had passed. It was not ice, however, but seemed to be more of a crystal, for it would not melt even when we held a flame to it, and when struck with a hatchet it simply gave a dullish sound and did not break.
Upon entering the barn we were amazed, as two good horses stood in their stalls immovable. They were alive, but neither could move a muscle. They seemed to be paralyzed and stood there more like statues than anything else. They were warm and breathed all right, but aside from this you could not tell they were alive. I applied the whip, and they never flinched. A dog that sleeps in the barn was dead and appeared completely petrified. He was lying on the ground with his head on his paws just like he was sleeping. When I left home this afternoon, everything was just as I I have described it to you. - "Ogden Standard Examiner, Ogden, Utah - 1 July 1893"

Ufo Sighting In Mount Clemens
It was roughly 4:30 am, mid September. I was on my porch that faces the west, having a cigarette. As I was standing there, a extremely bright beam of light appears on the one side of the peak of the neighbors roof. It was so bright, it casted shadows from it. The light then disappeared, and another beam of light comes down on the opposite side of the roof peak. At first what came to my mind was, did my neighbor install security lights on his roof? That made no sense, as he has had no reason or problems that would cause him to install this type of lights. I then thought that maybe another neighbor had a flash light out and was shining it at his roof, but that made no sense either, because the neighbor would have had to have been way up high with the light pointing down. I looked up to see where this light was shining down from, and could only see up about as far as maybe 300 feet, but there was nothing up above from where the light could have came from. There was no sound coming from above, like maybe a helicopter or airplane it could have come from. And what else was so unusual about this, there were NO sounds going on at all, it was dead quiet. No car sounds, no birds singing, no crickets, no cicada sounds, nothing. This situation lasted no more than a minute. I became really scared, seeing this light coming from out of nowhere. If you were to go into my neighbors yard, there would have been no obstruction from trees or power lines in the path of this bright beam of light coming down on the roof. It just stopped, all of a sudden. I stood there, trying to justify what I just saw, and could not come up with any viable reason as to how this could have happened. I saw the neighbor at about 5:30 am, leaving for work, and I just asked him if anything strange had happened at his house recently, and he said no. I did not want to ask him directly about the light beam, I thought he would think I was crazy. He just moved into this house about 6 weeks before this happened. Now each time I am out side, I am always looking over to his house to see if this happens again. This has really bothered me since it happened. If anyone has heard of something like this happening around here, please contact me and talk to me about it, please? Thank you, [Name removed/cms/tg]

WHAT HAPPENED WITH DISCOVERY CHANNEL UFO CAPTURE
SHORT UFO FACT: [The Roswell saga actually began in Silver City, New Mexico on June 25. Dr. R. F. Sensenbaugher, a dentist, reported sighting a saucer-shaped UFO fly over, that was about one-half the size of the full moon. Two days later, in Pope, New Mexico, W. C. Dobbs reported a white, glowing object flying overhead, not too far from the White Sands missile range. On the same day, Captain E. B. Detchmendy reported to his commanding officer that he saw a white, glowing UFO pass over the missile range. Two days later, on June 29, Rocket expert C. J. Zohn and three of his technicians, who were stationed at White Sands, watched a giant silver disc moving northward over the desert. On July 2, a UFO was tracked at three separate installations; Alamogordo, White Sands, and Roswell. In Roswell, on the same day, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Wilmot saw a UFO. They report its appearance as "TWO INVERTED SAUCERS FACED MOUTH TO MOUTH," moving at a high rate of speed over their house.]

The Flying Saucerers
Arthur Shuttlewood suggested in "The Flying Saucerers "(1976) that the phenomena he had witnessed in the vicinity of Warminster posed "a mystery not to be fully revealed until man has solved the equally baffling mystery of knowing and understanding himself and his fellow creatures throughout the universe... More and more, intelligent people are discussing links with other dimensions and planes of existence, psychic elements and forces of cosmic energy..."
In addition to reflecting about some of the various circumstances motivating him to make these comments, he considered in his fourth book such abstruse topics as parallel universes, inner Earth inhabitants, and humans having been "seeded" upon Earth from outer space. Shuttlewood reminded, "Yet nothing rises above nature, so we may forget the word supernatural."
It was in May 1967 that strong clues to what may prove to be prime missions and objectives of UFO intelligence in our atmosphere were uncovered at Warminster. The fact that most sightings and all reputed landings of UFOs in Britain stemmed from the guidemarks of seven White Horses situated west to east, from the one at Westbury to that at Uffington, set us thinking.
Shuttlewood quoted David Holton, a local naturalist, herbalist and chiropodist:
"Close and careful observation in the Warminster area, itself a cradle of ancient religion and mysticism, will satisfy even the most sceptical of the reality of subconscious forces that have made headline news in recent years. The mistake is so often made of confusing 'reality' with purely physical states, anything else being regarded as 'unreal.' Modern physicists do not fall into this trap. They now know that all matter is basically atomic and all atoms are basically energy, a purely etheric 'substance.' Anything etheric is as 'real' as physical matter, the only difference being in the way it is perceived; that is, by other channels than the known senses."
In "The Flying Saucer"ers" Shuttlewood quoted from books by such authors as Valery Brussof, Bruce L. Cathie, Levi H. Dowling, Sir Ambrose Fleming, Charles Fort, Sir James Jeans, John Keel, Ivan Panin, F. C. Payne, Max H. Plindt, Brinsley Le Poer Trench, and Paramahansa Yogananda.
Shuttlewood's perspective had developed over the course of ten years of close study and evaluation of the phenomena sometimes considered categorically with the term 'UFOlogy.'
... one must not make the unpardonable error of ignoring or rejecting matter that may not fit a preconceived pet theory or favourite fetish. Some realists discount much of what they see as "nothing but lights in the sky." Those lights in the heavens could turn out to be far more important than clear-cut and apparently metallic aeroforms skipping through the skies in daylight.
In the following excerpt, a crucial personal experience is described by Shuttlewood. The event was one of two that at first he found "frightening in the extreme, until assessed in cool retrospect." He confessed, "I hesitate to relate them, although it will torment my mind and conscience if I deny them space."
Believe or disbelieve me: that is your prerogative. Yet they cement the bases for my own conclusions about flying sorcerers today, after almost ten years of studying them at closest possible range. One early October night in 1969 I walked away from a few people gathered at Cradle Hill gates and wended my way up the road leading to the military vedette post. I halted opposite a semi-circular screen of bushes and undergrowth on the right, bordering the road and a large meadow this side of Long Wood. For the sakes of those assembled at the gates, some of whom had journeyed long distances in hopes of seeing something inexplicable overhead, I wondered if low and dense cloud cover would break and conditions for viewing become more agreeable. Sure enough, the sky cleared on one side of the copse and a few silvery stars peeped shyly through jagged lines of disrupted cloud, wan but promising.
I feel genuine sorrow for nice people who come onto our hills and go away disappointed because weather and sky are unsuitable. I therefore breathed a sigh of relief at the rift in cloudbanks. In all fairness, our team have always stressed there is scant likelihood of seeing our flying friends under poor atmospheric conditions. I was about a yard out into the road, well divorced from the barbed wire and hedgerows to my left. As I stood there looking over the copse area, three sharp tugs came at the bottom of my light tweed jacket, behind me... I was riveted to the spot! I felt my scalp tingle and limbs tremble violently. A cold shiver snaked through me when I realised that this was no practical joke or hoax. No one had left the gates and sneaked up on me. There was no one and nothing visible to tug so imperiously at my jacket.
My inside seemed to overturn, my heart leapt painfully and I felt awful, rooted there and unable to move a sinew for fearful seconds that dragged to eternity. Then my legs carried me unsteadily from the site. Almost in a state of physical collapse, I inched my way backwards, managing to turn and break into a lifeless jogtrot after several unending yards. Like the unaccountable encroaching of the heavy walker, the invisible coat-tugging entity has since affected quite a few venturing souls along that road, in the copse region, or at Starr Hill. This is some comfort to me - and I am thankful that witnesses such as surgical chiropodist James Webster, Tonbridge, Kent, and his brother Tony from Glastonbury, can support me over the veracity of a minor incident that to me assumed major revelation status when it happened. Whenever my jacket has been tugged since, it is usually a warning not to commit my cardinal sin of talking too freely or to the wrong people!
Here was my confirmation that an intelligence walks among us unseen. A beautiful golden UFO sailed between the two copses within a minute or so of the coat-tugging episode. Watchers were thrilled, for it was a supreme example of the flying unknown. The brothers took photos of the gold-plumaged ovoid as it executed a semi-circular flight path not far from the screen of bushes where I suffered the nightmare of coat-pulling insistence. Reaching home in the early hours, I was still shaken, mentally agitated, swearing I would never go skywatching again. Attacked by something invisible, I easily could have been killed or badly maimed, unable to defend myself, my earthly mind reasoned. Then, in quiet retrospect, wiser logic took over and I suddenly knew I was being assured, mutely, that there are other dimensions of life besides our own, and all life forms should be treated with respect as sacred. An ultra-realist seeking truth about UFOs, I was forced to change tack to keep on the correct course.
Shuttlewood's "second indelible experience" involved an incident near Copse No. 2 when he was watching several lighted objects in the sky while walking and felt "the oddest sensation of my life" and described physically feeling himself floating. He recalled crying out "Please don't take me. I'm not ready yet!" Shuttlewood commented:
When reading stories of people taken aboard alien spacecraft in books that cater for sheet sensationalism, I have thought "What utter rubbish. Impossible!" Now I am not nearly so sure. Some such tales could be perfectly true, I intuit, yet I would be cock-a-hoop with joy if I could state, definitely and without misgivings, precisely why flying sorcerers are here among us today in greater numbers than ever before; and would relish being able to claim everything had been revealed to me by 'them.'
Shuttlewood included a passage from "The Wheel of Life: The Autobiography of a Western Buddhist" (1959) by John Blofield to suggest how one variation of Warminster UFO sightings correlated with the Eastern spiritual belief that the Bodhisattva manifests himself to the faithful. The incident occurred on the sacred mountain of Wu T'ai.
"We reached the highest temple during the late afternoon and gazed... at a small tower built upon the topmost pinnacle about a hundred feet above us. One of the monks asked us to pay particular attention to the fact that the window of this tower overlooked mile upon mile of empty space. Although we were surrounded by mountains on all sides, there was no single peak which seemed to be on a level with that tower. This observation of the entirely empty space confronting it was very necessary to our appreciation of what we hoped to behold during the night. What we expected to see was a very extraordinary phenomenon which many people suppose to be a manifestation of the Bodhisattva himself: something reminiscent of the burning bush and pillars of fire seen by Moses!
"We went to bed soon after dark, but in such a state of excitement that none of us could sleep. The cold was so bitter that Kuggtsun and I each rolled up in a cocoon of warm blankets and lay with the backs of our cocoons tightly pressed together for warmth. Then, shortly after midnight, a monk carrying a lantern stepped into our room and cried "The Bodhisattva has appeared." Almost oblivious of the cruel cold, we threw off our thick quilts and hurried into our padded gowns and warm cloth shoes. My teeth were chattering loudly but the cold held no pain for me then, even though I had stepped from my cocoon almost naked. Fully dressed, we wound quilts about us like cumberous shawls and walked out into the monastery compounds.
"The ascent to the door of the tower occupied less than a minute. As each one entered the little room and came face to face with the window beyond, he gave a little shout of surprise - as though all our hours of talk had not sufficiently prepared us for what we saw now. There, in the great open spaces beyond the window, apparently not more than one or two hundred feet away, innumerable balls of fire floated majestically past. We could not judge their size, for nobody knew how far away they were, but they appeared like the fluffy woolen balls that babies play with, seen close up. They seemed to be moving at the stately pace of large, well-fed fish, aimlessly cleaving their way through the water: but of course their actual pace could not be determined without knowledge of the intervening distance.
"Where they came from, what they were and where they went after fading from sight in the west, nobody could tell. Fluffy balls of orange-coloured fire moving through space, unhurried and majestic - truly a fitting manifestation of divinity!"
"Assuming that a Wisdom Force does exist in the universe as a separate entity - separate, that is, on the plane of differentiated phenomena - it is still difficult to understand why it should manifest itself materially in the form of slowly-moving balls of fire."
Shuttlewood responded:
Frankly, I am in full agreement with the soulful summing-up by the author, for we at Warminster have often seen these golden peardrop forms floating gracefully, like ducks bobbing elegantly on rippling water, at leisurely pace along the tree-stippled horizons of our local hills. They are the finest type possible of flying saucers, sending waves of warm emotion through the spectator when they hover and pulsate with cosmic energy we cannot measure, perhaps because it is measureless and timeless. These are the UFOs we welcome most, for from their proximity in remote regions on star-spangled nights, their soft lambent glow suffusing the scrubland and tree patches with light, we somehow intuit that we all belong to the same universal family; and that, somewhere along the dark corridors of the dim past, we were the ones who foolishly switched-off the light of communication between us! My inspired reckoning is that these are the giants of past ages in modern guise, ever reminding us that mankind faces many challenges before he completes his final life-cycle at the very hub of our wonder-filled universe.
"The Flying Saucerers" also presents observations about UFOlogy from a vantage point of people in military occupations during the 1970s. Here are some excerpts.
World War 2 was especially rich in mysterious aerial phenomena, including the 'foo' fighter discoid that worried German and Japanese air crews as well as the American and British. And one of the grave dangers at present is that a mistaken impression of a UFO might precipitate the beginning of another world-wide conflagration of hate, death and misery on an unprecedented scale. The possibility is frightening and must be uppermost in the minds of governmental departments and ministries everywhere. In April of 1973 a landing of a daytime flying saucer was reported to the police at Gwent, near Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, (where later, in early 1974, mysterious explosions over mountainous terrain were reported, with no debris ever being found).
I heard of the police report which duly went to a government investigating branch, and learned the whole story of how two little girls alleged they saw the luminous landed spacecraft in a field at Gwent - and became scared at the unearthly contraption in the meadow, wingless and shimmering. A GPO engineer who knew the girls went with them to the scene. No longer so scared, they entered the field with him. He gave a complete description of the craft to the police; all three added that, when they reached a point no more than seventy-five yards from the glowing spaceship, it suddenly dematerialized! It did not tilt upwards at one end, a manoeuvre we have previously witnessed at Warminster before the departure of a near-landed aeroform... it simply disappeared from view.
One of my officers in the Grenadier Guards in the last war was Lord Carrington, Defence Minister in the Conservative Government in 1973. So I wrote a personal letter to him, telling him I knew the police and his investigating unit had the Gwent landing story at first hand, incorporating names and addresses. In his reply, he did not deny the substance of the alleged unusual adventure that befell the two girls and an adult companion in that field. But, after assuring me that the government had carefully considered all evidence to date on reported UFO appearances, from its special branch, he told me that none of the evaluated testimony regarding sightings or landings indicated any threat to our national security, sovereignty or defence!
So the government, he emphasized, has no 'official' attitude on UFOs, what or who they are and from whence they come.
In another chapter, Shuttlewood commented, "It is a shame that those in authority, in powerful positions and occupying seats of national and international control, insist upon fobbing-off an all-too-gullible public with long lists of preferred alternatives and laughable alibis instead of the blunt truth that UFOs are actual and factual."
Many of these circumstances are worthy of contemplation. It has long been evident that there are individuals operating within military or other group hierarchies who fail to understand that each person is responsible for one's actions. Countries, governments and agencies, corporations - these are all constructs to offer entitlements to the people functioning within these paperwork principalities. When someone takes some action with the mistaken belief that he or she is merely following protocol, there is a failure to understand the human predicament in each decision of serving or failing to serve the 'greater good'. Concerning unidentified flying objects and other anomalous occurrences, each instance of suppression of information or evidence that could expand the awareness of people universally is a lost opportunity for contributing to cultural progress and heightening social awareness.

The Swedish Ghost Rockets
The first reports of ghost rockets were made on February 26, 1946, by Finnish observers. About 2,000 sightings were logged between May and December 1946, with peaks on 9 and 11 August 1946. Two hundred sightings were verified with radar returns, and authorities recovered physical fragments which were attributed to ghost rockets.
Investigations concluded that many ghost rocket sightings were probably caused by meteors. For example, the peaks of the sightings, on the 9 and 11 August 1946, also fall within the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower. However, most ghost rocket sightings did not occur during meteor shower activity, and furthermore displayed characteristics inconsistent with meteors, such as reported maneuverability.
Debate continues as to the origins of the unidentified ghost rockets. In 1946, however, it was thought likely that they originated from the former German rocket facility at Peenem"unde, and were long-range tests by the Russians of captured German V-1 or V-2 missiles, or perhaps another early form of cruise missile because of the ways they were sometimes seen to maneuver. This prompted the Swedish Army to issue a directive stating that newspapers were not to report the exact location of ghost rocket sightings, or any information regarding the direction or speed of the object. This information, they reasoned, was vital for evaluation purposes to the nation or nations performing the tests. However, some investigators for the Swedish military apparently believed the objects could not be conventionally explained, and instead hypothesized an extraterrestrial origin.
DESCRIPTIONS AND EARLY INVESTIGATIONS The early Russian origins theory was rejected by Swedish, British, and U.S. military investigators because no recognizable rocket fragments were ever found, and according to some sightings the objects usually left no exhaust trail, some moved too slowly and usually flew horizontally, they sometimes traveled and maneuvered in formation, and they were usually silent. The sightings most often consisted of fast-flying rocket- or missile- shaped objects, with or without wings, visible for mere seconds. Instances of slower moving cigar shaped objects are also known. A hissing or rumbling sound was sometimes reported.Crashes were not uncommon, almost always in lakes. Reports were made of objects crashing into a lake, then propelling themselves across the surface before sinking, as well as ordinary crashes. The Swedish military performed several dives in the affected lakes shortly after the crashes, but found nothing other than occasional craters in the lake bottom or torn off aquatic plants.Swedish Air Force officer Karl-G"osta Bartoll searching for "ghost rocket" seen to crash into Lake K"olmj"arv on July 19, 1946.
The best known of these crashes occurred on July 19, 1946, into Lake K"olmj"arv, Sweden. Witnesses reported a gray, rocket-shaped object with wings crashing in the lake. One witness interviewed heard a thunderclap, possibly the object exploding. However, a 3 week military search conducted in intense secrecy again turned up nothing.
Immediately after the investigation, the Swedish Air Force officer who led the search, Karl-G"osta Bartoll (photo right), submitted a report in which he stated that the bottom of the lake had been disturbed but nothing found and that "there are many indications that the K"olmj"arv object disintegrated itself...the object was probably manufactured in a lightweight material, possibly a kind of magnesium alloy that would disintegrate easily, and not give indications on our instruments". When Bartoll was later interviewed in 1984 by Swedish researcher Clas Svahn, he again said their investigation suggested the object largely disintegrated in flight and insisted that "what people saw were real, physical objects".On October 10, 1946, the Swedish Defense Staff publicly stated, "Most observations are vague and must be treated very skeptically. In some cases, however, clear, unambiguous observations have been made that cannot be explained as natural phenomena, Swedish aircraft, or imagination on the part of the observer. Echo, radar, and other equipment registered readings but gave no clue as to the nature of the objects". It was also stated that fragments alleged to have come from the missiles were nothing more than ordinary coke or slag.On December 3, 1946, a memo was drafted for the Swedish Ghost Rocket committee stating "nearly one hundred impacts have been reported and thirty pieces of debris have been received and examined by FOA" (later said to be meteoritefragments). Of the nearly 1000 reports that had been received by the Swedish Defense Staff to November 29, 225 were considered observations of "real physical objects" and every one had been seen in broad daylight.U.S. INVOLVEMENT In early August 1946 Swedish Lt. Lennart Neckman of the Defense Staff's Air Defense Division saw something that was "without a doubt... a rocket projectile". On August 14, 1946, the New York Times reported that Undersecretary of State Dean Acheson was "very much interested" in the ghost rocket reports, so was U.S. Army Air Force intelligence as indicated nonpublicly by later documents. Then on August 20, the Times reported that two U.S. experts on aerial warfare, aviation legend General Jimmy Doolittle and General David Sarnoff, president of RCA, arrived in Stockholm, ostensibly on private business and independently of each other. The official explanation was that Doolittle, who was now vice-president of the Shell Oil Company, was inspecting Shell branch offices in Europe, while Sarnoff, a former member of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's London staff, was studying the market for radio equipment. However, the Times story indicated that the Chief of the Swedish Defense Staff, made no secret that he "was extremely interested in asking the two generals advice and, if possible, would place all available reports before them". Doolittle and Sarnoff were briefed that on several occasions the ghost rockets had been tracked on radar. Sarnoff was later quoted by the N.Y. Times on September 30 saying that he was "convinced that the 'ghost bombs' are no myth but real missiles".On August 22, 1946, the director of the Central Intelligence Group (CIG), Lt. Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg, wrote a Top Secret memo to President Truman, perhaps based in part on information from Doolittle and Sarnoff. Vandenberg stated that the "weight of evidence" pointed to Peenem"unde as origin of the missiles, that US MA (military attach'e) in Moscow had been told by 'key Swedish Air Officer' that radar course-plotting had led to conclusion that Peenem"unde was the launch site. CIG speculates that the missiles are extended-range developments of V-1 being aimed for the Gulf of Bothnia for test purposes and do not overfly Swedish territory specifically for intimidation; self-destruct by small demolition charge or burning".Nevertheless, there are no reports of rocket launches at Peenem"unde or the Greifswalder Oie after February 21, 1945.

The Queen Mary
The Queen Mary sailed her maiden voyage on May 27, 1936. Built in Scotland to be used as part of a two-ship express service from Southampton to Cherbourg to New York, the Queen Mary is 1,000 feet long, and in her day was said to be bigger, faster and more powerful than the Titanic. She also held the record for the fastest-ever North Atlantic crossing. The historic ocean liner's passengers included the most celebrated people of the time, including royalty, top entertainment figures and important world leaders.
At the start of World War II in 1939, luxury travel stopped and the ship was turned into a carrier ship that was used by allied forces to carry troops from March of 1940 to September of 1946. It was during this time that she would become known as "The Grey Ghost". By the end of World War II, the ship had carried more than 700,000 troops, traveled over 500,000 miles and played a significant role in almost every major Allied campaign. She also survived a collision at sea, set the record for carrying the most people ever on a floating vessel (16,683), and participated in the D-Day invasion.
When the war ended, the Queen Mary was refurbished and started up her elegant cruises again in July, 1947, with weekly service between Southampton, Cherbourg, and New York. By the early 1960's, the popularity of transatlantic cruises greatly decreased due to the increasing affordability of air travel. The ship attempted to revive its popularity, but without central air conditioning, outdoor pools, or other amenities offered on most other cruise ships, the attempt was unsuccessful.
In 1967, the Queen Mary was pulled from service and was sold to the city of Long Beach, California, to be used as a maritime museum and hotel. On December 9, 1967, she made her final voyage to Long Beach.
During her 60-year history, the Queen Mary was the site of 49 reported deaths, opening the doorway for potential spirits to haunt her. Reported hauntings include a young crewman in the engine room, swimmers in the first-class pool, a man in black, and a woman in blue. Some of the Queen Mary's most haunted places include the propeller box, engine room, boiler room, cargo hold and first class swimming pool.
One of these hauntings is thought to be the spirit of John Pedder, a fireman in his late teens who was crushed to death by a watertight door in 1966 during a routine drill. Unexplained knocking has been heard around the door, and a tour guide reported she saw a figure dressed in dark clothing as she was leaving the area where the young man had been killed. She saw his face and recognized him from his photographs. He was dressed in blue coveralls and sporting a beard. The young man has often been seen walking along Shaft Alley before disappearing by door number 13. This famous door was used in the filming of the Posiedon Adventure and has reportedly crushed at least two men during the ship's history.
The first-class swimming pool seems to be a hot spot for ghostly encounters. Wet footprints mysteriously appear even though there's not a drop of water in the pool. These footsteps lead from the deck of the pool to the changing rooms. Women in vintage bathing suits are occasionally seen stopping by for a swim, even though the pool has been closed for more than 30 years. There have also been reports of seeing the spirit of a young girl carrying her teddy bear along with disembodied voices, laughter and splashing sounds.
In the second class pool area the spirit of another little girl named Jackie is often been seen and heard. The girl drowned in the pool during the ship's sailing days and doesn't seem to want to move on. Her voice and the sound of laughter has been captured in this area.
In the room that was used as the third class playroom, there have been reports of the sound of children crying in the nursery room. There is also a report that a single baby's cry has been heard. This crying is thought to be that of an infant boy who died there shortly after he was born.
In some of the first-class staterooms there have been reports of a tall, dark haired man wearing a 1930's style suit showing up in various places. In addition to sightings of the man, the faucets and lights get turned on in the middle of the night, and phones ring in the early morning hours but no one is ever on the other end of the line.
There are several other reports of sightings about the ship including a beautiful young woman in an elegant white evening gown who dances alone in a shadowy corner of the salon, which was once used as the ship's first-class lounge. Another mysterious woman in white has been seen close to the front desk. She will usually disappear behind a pillar.
Other phenomena that has been reported throughout the ship include the sounds of knocking, doors slamming and high pitched squeals, drastic temperature changes, and the recurring smells of another time.
The Queen Mary has been investigated by a number of paranormal professionals, printed publications, television shows like Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted, and several others. In addition to portions of the movie "The Poseidon Adventure" being filmed there, the X-Files filmed a 1998 WWII era episode about a time warp in the Bermuda Triangle aboard the ship. That was a great episode - it was called "Triangle" - you should check it out if you missed it!
On the Ghost Hunters episode, what was thought to be a fantastic paranormal event caught on tape turned out to be not so fantastic as it appeared someone had tampered with the video camera. So is the Queen Mary really haunted or not? The Ghost Hunters are heading back out there in February of 2008 to see if they can find out. Hopefully there won't be any tampering this time and they can capture some evidence to support all the claims of paranormal activity on the Queen Mary.

Summary: UFO Rally at MDC
Report:
Whatever thing in this report is 100% scratch and straightforward. I have no reason to cause up or purpose no matter what, I have no other reason other than to try and let somebody see what I saw on this day, and the unimaginable clash that it has had on me all these numberless soul future. It is not my gist to try and reassure the wet blanket and nonbelievers, but I request be maxim and upfront including the undertakings that transpired on this day. Race can thorough what they request from this, but the relatives who comprehend me, comprehend that I am not advantage of innovation up stories, or lying for that send out. Why did I power to compose now after so numberless soul have passed, or for that send out to carry it up at all? Probably it is all the undertakings leaving on in the world right now. Donate are so numberless curious undertakings thing all over the planet. It is no secret that high-class and high-class UFO sightings are thing on a model basis. I'm words this report for my own original reasons. The relatives that I first-class to lot in life this including request most possible be resembling friends and household. I have no reason to try and get any form of special consideration, and loyal not looking for any disposition of star or recognition. Spell I calm can, I suppose to ask this trade show as as it should be as viable, and including as by a long way detail as I can commit to memory. One of my regrets is that I did not go straight indigenous and compose down the straightforward date that this occurred. In the last 10 soul or so, I have been perpetuation very particular records of day to day undertakings, seldom skipping any. Gloomily arrived this time grow old, I didn't give by a long way importance to such ram and thus did not keep in good condition up including the whole story. As far as my prevalent compunction including this encounter, would have to be the fact that I did not have a camera or video recorder in paperback to aid my story. If perfectly I did, they would most loyal be positive of the most revealing up resembling and in cool detail, as ever witnessed by someone. I say this not to maintain, but to merely state a fact. I have seen apparently hundreds of videos on You Pole, positive in actual fact bulky, positive bad, others down right unintelligent or a hoax. I am reliable that what I saw would have afforded me a sojourn from the so called "Men In Black". It would have been that mock, and set the best by which all skeptics would have to admit- For instance WAS THAT? The abovementioned is the station of my story. For instance follows request be the time line of what happened on this established day, one that I request never skip over.
Spell I don't comprehend the straightforward date that this occurred, I do comprehend that it was the winter of 1996, around November or December. I comprehend this the same as the years were sprightly, and all the plants had fallen off the trees- this I comprehend for sure. I was dynamic at Milliken Intend Intricate in LaGrange Georgia. My normal work hour was 8:00 - 5:00 o'clock, Monday open Friday- a model office quandary. It was not distinct for me to work over an extra hour to the same degree ever right. On this about day, I nearby down my laptop and perched to examine the government at promptly 5:45pm. I commit to memory a chap walking gaining of me, physically 50' feet or so. He exited the side parking lot edit first, a few seconds future I did the self-same. He otherwise had a head opening leaving to his car, which was towards the not here as you walk out the side doors. My car was parked high-class to the right as you walked out the edit. I request try to give a approval as to wherever his car was, as apposed to mine. It was at this little (after going the government) that I first saw the unidentified flying object including my at a tangent vision. At that very little the object had straight came from the right set a date for of the government. It was at a very low smooth as glass, physically 80' - 100' feet in the air. It was traveler from a SW sense (215^0 azimuth), leaving in a NE sense (35^0 azimuth), at a line sight mount of physically 35^0- 40^0 degrees. It was carrying at a very low rate of chase, appropriately giving me a lot of time to investigate it. It ended redress no burly at all- none anything. Probably the one thing that baffled my eye first was the huge earn light on the foot of the craft. It was so earn that at mature it was hardheaded to lopsided at. The top portion of the craft was sparkly ancient clanging. I commit to memory viewpoint how curious that this craft had appendages sticking come to light from the sides, different numerical sizes and shapes- whatever thing that I would future forward to as probes. Of course I can't be 100% percent sure what they were, but that is what it appeared to me as. As mentioned first-class, the craft inspired or hovered calculatingly from a south westerly sense leaving towards the north east. Once it came fair and square over the parking lot, I may possibly see it plainly, innovation out the dominant shape and estimation function of the craft. At the time of this sighting, I ram a 1980 Pallid Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. The function of this model car is 18.5' feet want very much. Given this fact and judging the meeting and set against of the craft, and the confidence to wherever I was standing- I imaginary the object as being physically 25' feet in approach. It was not a huge craft by no means, but was loyal advantage of being maneuvered or hovering by positive disposition of dexterous life form. As the craft hovered calculatingly over the parking lot and outer surface over the vegetation in the shameful, in-between physically two parking lots, it continued carrying in the north east sense. I never took my eyes off the object the emerald time, and as it inspired on diagonally the parking lot and close by over the key target in assumption of the office difficult, it did whatever thing that defied all explanation of physics. It went from carrying curb, let's say 5 mph, to an accelerated chase so creatively, the perfectly way to model it would be: "picture making a shell" out of the cask of a gun- soberly a staining, in addition to it was over and done. I have see taciturn cases of flying objects work the self-same thing as I have described nearby. All one has to do is go to You Pole and type in "UFO", it wouldn't undertake want very much to supplier positive videos fair taciturn military exercises. An sort would be to type in the look on You Tube: "UFO Manager Arm In Italy", in addition to you may possibly elucidate the quotient by which I am unfolding. I am reliable that America nor any other territory on this planet has no matter what in its military artillery that may possibly remodel resembling to what I witnessed. Let me say for the record: this was not an even, jet, helicopter, brilliant or no matter what else of this earth. I loyal don't pocket to be told that it was "everglade gas" or the planet "Venus", or no matter what else that would slander my dexterous. For instance I saw was real, it in actual fact did be as tall as, it took homeland promptly as I have outlined nearby, and no I am not outrageous by a want very much shot.
Summary: The chap walking out the edit gaining of me to his car never saw this object. As shortly as I saw this object, I hail to bawl to this chap and say: "hey man, do you see that", but I was comparatively mumbled, the vernacular would not remodel out. I was so in awe at the sight of this UFO, that I straight may possibly not undertake my eyes off it- not dependable for a beyond. The particular thing about this emerald scenario- I may possibly commit to memory evocative individually that "this is a real UFO that I'm looking at". I straight knew a short time ago what it was, but at the self-same time I couldn't guess that it was right put on in assumption of me, in all its skepticism and mystery.
Note: On July 2nd, 2011- I did meander backing to the homeland wherever this trade show took homeland and took a variety of pictures. I used the aid of my old compass in paperback to get an particular caption on wherever I was standing, in attach to what sense the craft was traveler. Keep in motive these photos were in a meeting in the norm of summer, including the vegetation in depth of plants, not to mention these vegetation have strong noticeably over the outer surface 15 soul.
I have used the aid of "Google Map" in paperback to show a satellite position from space, the office difficult wherever I worked at the time (MDC). I dependable have a picture of what my sickly Cadillac looked elaborate in paperback to give positive importance to the function of this object. The UFO was dimly fat in approach than that of my car, but it was the perfectly thing at the time that I may possibly approval in unfolding the objects function. At long last, I found a picture on the internet that fair and square a lot resembled the object in require. Divert profile that I did use software on my laptop (MGI PhotoSuite IV) to collaboration forward intensify the photo. It was my gist to show a truer quantity to what I saw on that day. It is not acceptably the self-same in each one detail, but loyal very resembling. One exception outlay mentioning nearby is that the photo that I have is darker, the suitable UFO was very sparkly and clanging on top. The double bed was fair and square darker than the top due to the clarification self-supporting, keep out for one huge light in the middle- this was staggeringly flamboyant.
The information that I have provided is true. This report is all in all for my own original take back. If other relatives see this and are inspired- that would cool. If others see it and turn over in your mind its hog-wash, that's OK too. It is not my gist to cause relatives guess me. I do turn over in your mind relatives essential open their minds to the seek that we humans are expert, if we turn over in your mind that we are the perfectly dexterous beings in the universe.
